Titan Prefers Indian Workers Over The French

Titan CEO
Here is an interesting war of words that took place between U.S tire manufacturer Titan International's boss and the French Industry minister Arnaud Montebourg, which could bring India some business. Hold on! What does a spat between a U.S firm and the French government has to do with India? Read on.

Titan was approached by the French government with an offer to sell Goodyear's Amiens Nord factory in northern France, which is under loss. To this, Titan's President and CEO Maurice "Morry" Taylor responded with a letter to Montebourg, which has now made it's way to the media.

Here is a section of the letter as quoted by Reuters:
"The French workforce gets paid high wages but works only three hours. They get one hour for breaks and lunch, talk for three and work for three," Taylor wrote on February 8 in the letter in English addressed to the minister, Arnaud Montebourg.
"I told this to the French union workers to their faces. They told me that's the French way!" Taylor added in the letter, which was posted by businessdaily Les Echos on its website on Wednesday and which the ministry confirmed was genuine.
"How stupid do you think we are?" he asked at one point.
"Titan is going to buy a Chinese tire company or an Indian one, pay less than one Euro per hour wage and ship all the tires France needs," he said. "You can keep the so-called workers."

Quite naturally, Taylor's letter drew much criticism, both from the French media and the French government.

In his mordant response, French minister Montebourg wrote back, comparing French with China and India and pointed out that his country stood way ahead of the other two in terms of being a global business investment destination.

"Can I remind you that Titan, the business you run, is 20 times smaller than Michelin, the French (tire) technology leader with international influence, and 35 times less profitable," Montebourg wrote in his letter.

While, nothing good has come out for either Titan or the French government out of the spat, time will tell whether or not it will bring India some business.
