SsangYong To Launch Eco Friendly Crossover Model
The SsangYong LIV-1 SUV Concept (seen above) revealed by the South Korean automaker at the Seoul International Motor Show was confirmed for production. While the LIV-1 is a premium full sized SUV model the Mahindra owned company also has entry level models in mind. During the same event SsangYong CEO, Lee Yoo-il revealed that the company is planning to launch a new compact and fuel efficient SUV model.
This new model will be built on a platform that is currently under development and will also serve many future SsangYong models. However, the first model to use the new platform will be an eco-friendly, compact SUV/crossover that will belong to the same segment as Ford EcoSport and Renault/Dacia Duster. The new crossover model will make use of a lighter and more fuel efficient, but powerful engine on the lines of Ford's EcoBoost engine.

SsangYong's strategy is straightforward. The present market demand is for compact SUVs that deliver decent performance, while offering good fuel economy. For SsangYong to expand in its existing markets and enter new markets it needs several new models. As for Mahindra, a crossover model will mean it will be able to take on Renault Duster which is currently growing unhindered in India and perhaps even Ford EcoSport, depending on how well the EcoSport performs post launch.
