Skoda To End Fabia Hatchback Production In India

The Fabia base model sells for an on road price that approaches the INR 6 lakhs mark and exceeds the INR 8 lakhs figure for the range topping variant. An amount which the average Indian buyer is not ready to shell out for a hatchback, despite the premium nature of the car.
The Fabia's high sales price is a direct result of heavy use of imported parts, which are assembled in Skoda's Indian assembly plants. In an effort to boost sales Skoda has increasingly offered discounts and rate cuts on the Fabia, but with hardly any success. The complete 2012-13 financial year saw only 3,343 Fabia hatchbacks leaving showrooms. April, 2013 saw a measly 115 units being sold. And to add to Skoda's woes, it loses a significant amount of money with each Fabia sold.
Assembly of Fabia hatchbacks will continue for a while, presumably for a few months, till the parts stockpile is exhausted. Further, the Fabia will be on sale till stocks completely dry out.
As far as a future re-entry is concerned, nothing is confirmed. The Fabia's story is the same as Honda Jazz, which suffered as a result of a premium price tag as well. However, Honda is said to have decided to bring back the new Jazz hatchback to India in 2014 or 2015. With the discontinuation of the Fabia, Skoda loses its presence in the small car segment in the country.
