Rolls Royce SUV Is A Possibility, Confirms CEO

By Ganesh

On one hand BMW is feeling the heat from both Mercedes-Benz and Audi, both of which have an edge over the former when it comes to luxury SUVs. Mercedes' M-Class SUVs have been outselling BMW's X5, while Audi's Q7 is also doing a better job than the Bavarian luxury SUV.

On the other hand is BMW owned British luxury brand Rolls Royce, which, though has no major threat, needs to expand to continue on its growth trajectory. And the luxury SUV segment is one that can help Rolls Royce make some substantial revenue.

Where previously Rolls Royce was against the prospect of entering the SUV segment, times have changed. To be remembered is that Bentley already has an SUV concept that is only a couple of years away from entering production. This makes it all the more important for Rolls Royce to have an SUV product on offer to prospective customers.

"We are intensively thinking about entering the SUV segment," Rolls-Royce CEO Torsten Müller-Ötvös informed Bloomberg recently. He also informed that the company is presently going through the stage of developing conceptual sketches to verify whether or not an SUV fits their bill.

Sounds like RR is in the very early stages of development and a production model could take about half a decade to come to life. On the other hand, Bentley will be out with its SUV by 2016.

A Rolls Royce SUV would require an all new platform to be developed. This could prove helpful for BMW as well, which could bring out a larger SUV (an X7 you could say) to better compete against the GL-Class and Q7.
