Range Rover Sport Crosses Arabian Desert In Record Time
Land Rover has realised that a good way to showcase the capabilities of Range Rovers and get some good publicity for a newly launched vehicle is to set records. It's never easy to break a record, but its comparatively easier to set a new one. The first thing you need to do in that case is find one that has not been set.
Earlier this month Land Rover used the Range Rover Sport to set a new record. That of the fastest time for a production vehicle to cross the Arabian Desert. Actually, this is not the first speed record set by the 2014 Range Rover Sport. More on that later.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport became the fastest production car to cross the "Empty Quarter" stretch of the Arabian Desert, which is the largest sand desert in the world and the second largest overall.

The Range Rover Sport started from Wadi Adda Wasir in Saudi Arabia and reached the border of United Arab Emirates, a distance of 849 km.

The 2014 Range Rover Sport took 10 hours and 22 minutes to cover that distance, at an average speed of 81.87 km/h.

The Range Rover Sport was driven by Moi Torrallardona, a seasoned 47 year old Spanish racer who has competed in the Dakar Rally ten times in a row, with a best finish of 6th overall.

The record setting Range Rover Sport was powered by a 510 PS 5.0 liter supercharged V8 petrol engine.

The record run was made on standard production tyres. The only modification done to the vehicle was the addition of an underbelly plate to protect the underside of the SUV.

"Desert driving requires a unique combination of speed, finesse and technical skill. It is crucial that you tackle the dunes with precision. Knowing the right time to go full throttle and the right time to slow down, takes experience and clear judgement," said Torrallardona.

"This unique way of driving requires a vehicle which has the same skillset - it must be both incredibly fast but also agile, responsive and well planted. The Range Rover Sport is exactly that. It is massively capable and is truly the best tool for conquering the desert," he added.

In June 2013, the 2014 Range Rover Sport became the fastest production car of any kind to climb Pikes Peak. The Range Rover made the 20 km hill climb in 12:35:61 minutes, at an average speed of 95.23 km/h.
