Quadricycle Recognized As A New Vehicle Segment By Government

Quadricycles will only be allowed to ply within city limits and as public transport vehicles and commercial vehicles. These vehicles cannot be used as personal transport. However, like all other vehicles they can be both battery and electric powered.

Quadricycles are being eyed as a viable alternate to three wheeled vehicles as they offer a relatively safer means of transport. However, quadricycles will need to have dual car-type braking system since there's no provision for crash tests.
Further regulations will ensure quadricycles meant to carry passengers will weigh no more than 450 kg and measure no longer than 3 meters, while commercial variants will have a limit of 550 kg and a length restriction of 3.7 meters. Passengers vehicles will also be allowed to ferry no more than 4 occupants, including the driver.
In battery powered variants of quadricycle though, the weight of the battery will be excluded from the total weight.
According to the ministry, a final notification will be issued within a month and these ultra compact four wheeled vehicles will be allowed to start operating after six months of the issue of the notification. This means, we should see the first quadricycle on road by mid-2014.
The first company that will come out with a quadricycle will be Bajaj Auto, which already has its RE60 model ready for production. This will be followed by launches by several other commercial and passenger vehicle manufacturers such as TVS, Tata Motors, Maruti Suzuki and Piaggio. Mahindra & Mahindra will most likely be the first to come out with an electric powered quadricycle.
