Pirelli Noise Cancelling System For Audi Sportcars

By Ganesh

Pirelli and noise cancellation system? That is correct, but they have not got into audio system business. Rather, this is the name of the latest tyre technology coming from the Formula 1 tyre supplier.

Pirelli Noise Cancellation System or PNCS is a run-silent technology applied in a new kind of road tyre. According to the tyre manufacturer, these tyres bring down noise level by two to three decibels or an an average, halve it.

How It Works
The technology makes use of a basic and simple technique of muffling the noise with the use of sound absorbing material. In this case that material is polyurethane.

Polyurethane is the same soft of cushioning material used in the soles of high-end sports shoes. This material is placed underneath the outer layer of rubber in the tyre. This soaks up the noise produced by the rolling of tyres on road. The level of noise thus getting transferred to other parts of the car like the cabin is reduced.

PNCS Tyres
These high end tyres will make their debut in a couple of high performance Audis - the RS 6 and the RS 7. Customers wanting to use these high tech tyres will have to opt for them since they will be made available as optional upgrades.

The tyres will measure 285/30ZR21 and 275/30ZR21 and will bear the "PNSC" markings on the sides.

There is no word on when these tyres will be made available for other vehicles or on the pricing.
