Mitsubishi Evo To Be A Nissan GT-R Rival

By Ganesh

Mitsubishi recently decided to formally withdraw the Lancer Evo sedan from India due to low sales figures. Lancer lovers will certainly miss it. But if there was any hope left of the Evo making a comeback with the next gen, there is none now.

Several previous reports have suggested that Mitsubishi may take the electric hybrid route for the Lancer Evo. This would not just make the car clean, but also add quite a few extra horses. Autocar now claims to have learnt from highly placed sources that this indeed is the case and such an Evo would also be a 500HP beast with a direct eye on its Japanese brother, Nissan GT-R.

An electric hybrid Lancer Evo would benefit from electric technology used by the MiEV Evolution II Pikes Peak prototype race car. Twin 80HP motors are likely to deploy electric power combined with fossil power from a 2.0 liter petrol engine. The car would, however, be finalized only after a lot of consideration concerning charging infrastructure.

Such a performance oriented Evo is, however, a couple of years away. Meanwhile, a regular Lancer EVO PHEV is expected to come out of the Japanese automaker's stable. The EVO PHEV, like the Outlander PHEV, would have a fuel economy of about 63 km/l. Mitsubishi, which is well known player in electric technology will most definitely include an all electric drive mode as well, with a range of approximately 64 kms.

In the end, it looks like the future generations of Lancer will lose their credentials of being highly accessible sports cars, even more so than the Nissan GT-R. Clearly, Mitsubishi it looking towards India for its future EVO customers.
