Schumacher To Drive Merc F1 Car Around Nurburgring

Michael Schumacher, the seven time Formula One World Champion, will lap the Nurburgring Nordschleife in a Mercedes Benz Formula 1 single seater. The last time a Formula 1 race car was seen on the infamous ‘Ring' was back in 2007, when Nick Heidfeld lapped in a BMW Sauber car.

The event has been arranged by Mercedes-Benz specially for motorsports fans and will be a part of the 24 Hours of Nurburgring. Michael Schumacher will be seen driving a Mercedes AMG Petronas F1 W02 - the same car that was used by the team in the 2011 Formula 1 season - on May 19.

This is, of course, not the first time Schumacher has lapped the Nürburgring. Previous to this, in 2011, he drove an original Silver Arrow Stromlinie W196 around the Grand Prix section of the track. Incidentally, the F1 W02 he will be driving this time is also referred to as the Silver Arrow.

"I have a lot of fond memories of the Nurburgring and am really looking forward to giving fans and friends from my home town of Kerpen, which is quite close to the Nurburgring, something to remember as they see me drive by," commented Schumacher.

However, a drive around the track in a Formula 1 car does not necessarily mean a blisteringly fast lap time. When Nick Heidfeld lapped the track in 2007, the focus was not on setting a lap record. Nick Heidfeld slowed down several times for photographers and fans throughout the track. Hopefully, Michael Schumacher's lap will be different and we'll see a new lap record being set.

The 2013 24 Hours of Nurburgring will take place from 17 till 20 May.
