Mercedes Benz Engines To Power Williams In 2014 F1

As Formula One teams prepare themselves to adjust to the major engine regulation changes that will take effect from the 2014 season onwards we are seeing engine supplier reshuffles. First its was McLaren, which announced it would move to Honda engines post 2014. Now its Williams F1 team, which will switch from Renault to Mercedes Benz for its engines from the 2014 F1 season.

The two have signed a long term partnership which will take effect from 2014 Formula One World Championship season onwards. As per the terms of contract Williams will source Mercedes-Benz Power Unit (Internal Combustion Engine plus Energy Recovery System) from Mercedes AMG High Performance Powertrains (HPP). Williams will continue to manufacture its own transmission.

Those who do not follow Formula One may not be aware of the major changes that will take effect from next year. Teams at present use naturally aspirated 2.4 liter V8 engines. This will change to 1.6 liter V6 turbocharged engines with extensive use of energy recovery techniques.

As per the 2014 regulations F1 cars will need to cover a distance of 300 km with only 100 kg of fuel onboard. Teams will be able to maintain the current level of power only if the engines become 30 percent more energy efficient. Teams can push the smaller engines only so much before they hit the limit, so key to more power will be energy recovery.

This is where Energy Recovery System (ERS) comes in. This new technology that will replace the existing KERS (Kinetic Energy Recovery System) will be capable of recovering and deploying 10 times more energy. ERS will recover energy from exhaust turbine and the rear axle, and transfer energy back to them.

The technology developed on track will benefit road cars immensely in the area of battery technology, hybrid systems, energy recovery and generally in making road cars more fuel efficient.
