Mercedes SLS AMG Electric Drive Sets Lap Record

By Ganesh

Mercedes Benz's AMG division felt it could break the Nurburgring lap record with the most powerful vehicle in its possession, the SLS AMG Electric Drive and so it did. The SLS AMG Electric Drive set a new world record by becoming the fastest electric car to complete a lap of the ‘Ring'.

The electric AMG supercar lapped the 'Ring' in 7 minutes and 56.234 seconds, becoming the first electric vehicle to do so in less than 8 minutes. This is also unlike most lap records you would see. Being an electric vehicle, the only sound comes from the tyres rolling on the tarmac.

About the ‘most powerful AMG' part. The SLS AMG Electric Drive is powered by four motors - one for each wheel. Total power delivered thus is 751 HP and an insane 1,000 Nm of maximum torque, which goes to all four wheels. As with all electric cars, all that torque is available right from the beginning, resulting in a spectacular acceleration of 0 to 100 km/h in 3.9 seconds. The electronically limited top speed is 250 km/h.

"Mercedes-AMG is the first vehicle manufacturer to have circled the Nordschleife in under eight minutes with an electrically-powered series production vehicle. This record run is further proof for our constant innovative vigour," said Ola Källenius, Chairman of Mercedes-AMG.
