McLaren And Honda Will Work Together On Road Cars
McLaren, the British sportscar maker and Honda, the world's largest internal combustion engine manufacturer, are open to working together to develop technology that can be implemented in street cars, Autocar has learnt. The news is not surprising and was expected after Honda was signed up to engine supplier for McLaren Formula 1 team from 2015.
"It's a pure Formula 1 contract, but we've already been looking at automotive technology and we're sharing that very openly," said Martin Whitmarsh, McLaren F1 head told the British publication recently. "Our road car strategy at the moment has no other automotive partner and Honda would be a good place to collaborate."
What Whitmarsh said was only what was possible, but not something that has already been finalized. Also, the results from such a partnership will appear only in the future.
McLaren currently offers the 12C, which still has a few years left before a replacement would be considered. The P1 was only introduced this year and the upcoming Porsche 911 rival, the P13 is already more or less developed. Hence, a new product, sharing technology from both automakers will come only much later.
Whitmarsh also clearly stated that such a partnership would be both sided, where there will be a free flow of technology between McLaren and Honda.
The first product, however, to use technology from both automakers could come from Honda. We are of course talking about the NSX, a sports car from Honda's luxury car division, Acura.
