Maserati Considering Own LaFerrari Based Supercar

By Ganesh

A little introduction is in order here for those who might not be familiar with the matter. Maserati and Ferrari come under the umbrella of parent company Fiat, which makes Ferrari and Maserati sister companies. Also, at one point of time Ferrari was in direct control of Maserati, which was once its arc rival.

It was during this time that the MC12 Stradale came into being. The MC12 Stradale could be called a rebadged version of Ferrari Enzo. It is built on the same platform as the Enzo and even shares the same V12 engine, albeit a detuned version. The design is however, slightly different.

So, when Ferrari brought out the LaFerrari in Geneva the question automatically popped up in the minds of many. Would Maserati follow suit with its own version of the LaFerrari? The answer, now it seems, is, yes.

Autocar says Maserati is considering building its own version of the LaFerrari hypercar and one of the reason behind the decision is the demand for LaFerrari. Since production is limited to only 499, Fiat is in a fix. Building a Maserati branded LaFerrari, (LaMaserati?) would be one way to quench the demand for the hypercar.

In contrast, the same V12 fitted in the MC12 Stradale was detuned to develop 620 HP, with a top speed limited to 229 km/h.

Ferrari LaFerrari has a hybrid engine that produces 963 HP, with 800 HP coming from the 6.3 liter V12 petrol engine. While top speed exceeds 300 km/h.

In a manner similar to the MC12 Stradale, a LaMaserati would underperform slightly in comparison to its Ferrari counterpart. It can also be clearly said the Maserati will not carry the LaFerrari's complex hybrid system. The other option would be to use a highly tuned version of the existing 3.8-litre turbocharged V8 used by the new Maserati Quattroporte.
A Maserati version of the LaFerrari is expected in 2015. The LaMaserati rendering shown here is the work of Anton Gjorsev from Deviant Art.
