Maruti Suzuki Plans To Launch Four New SUVs
Leading Indian automobile manufacturer Maruti Suzuki is reportedly planning to become a big time SUV seller. The company which currently does not have even a small stake in the SUV segment is said to be planning to launch four new SUVs in the next two years.
Maruti Suzuki currently has only one SUV in its line-up, the Gypsy. The carmaker has not even updated the Gypsy in recent years. The company has been concentrating on small and compact car segments where it has a wide array of products. But the fast increasing sales of SUVs in India has lead to a change of heart in Maruti Suzuki.
Maruti Suzuki first indicated its interest in SUVs last year when it displayed the XA Alpha concept SUV during the Delhi Auto Expo in January. The XA Alpha is a compact SUV measuring under four metres in length. We expect the production version of the XA Alpha to be launched by 2014.

While the XA Alpha has been developed in-house by Maruti Suzuki, the company is expected to take the help of its Japanese parent company Suzuki to develop more SUVs. The company has already unveiled a crossover version of the SX4 sedan in Europe and this car could also be launched in India.
The third new SUV from Maruti Suzuki could be based on the Swift DZire. Reports say the company is looking at its best selling compact car, the Swift as an ideal platform for a new SUV. All three SUVs discussed above will be aimed at the mass market. Maruti Suzuki is also looking at a compact premium SUV which could be a down sized version of the Grand Vitara.
With four news SUVs in its line-up, Maruti Suzuki will soon become a carmaker with a presence across all passenger vehicle segments and cannot be named only as a small car specialist.
