Mahindra & SsangYong Working On Electric SUVs
Mahindra & Mahindra, along with its South Korean brand SsangYong has plans to launch electric SUVs in the near future, according to some reports. Mahindra, recently launched its next generation Reva e20 all electric small car. However, the electric powertrain developed by Reva for this small city car is too small to power a large bodied SUV, which means new electric power trains will need to be developed.
"We are now beginning to collaborate on electric vehicle power trains and have a powertrain that can be used for high-end electric vehicles. NXR is a smaller vehicle. Larger vehicles will require bigger power trains, which will be developed jointly by Mahindra and Ssangyong. That work is at a planning phase," Pawan Goenka, head, automotive and farm equipment sectors for Mahindra and Mahindra, told DNA earlier this year.
According to a senior Mahindra official, as told to Autocar India, the automaker's Reva electric car division will help with the development of the new electric power trains. However, an electric SUV under the Reva name will not be manufactured.
Apart from the e2o, Mahindra has also unofficially confirmed that an electric scooter is on the line next, while a four seater electric car is being looked into as well.
