Mahindra e2o Initial Bookings Low Admits Dr Goenka
Even as Mahindra launched its brand new electric car offering, e20, in its home city Bangalore, initial bookings for India's next generation electric car have not been growing at the rate the automaker expected. This hard truth was revealed by Dr Pawan Goenka, President Mahindra Automotive and Farm Equipment Sectors, who confessed bookings have been disappointing, on the sidelines of annual conference of Confederations of Indian Industries.
The reason for the low bookings is understandable, since even the low end variant has a premium pricing that matches the price of premium hatchbacks and even compact SUVs.
For instance, in Bangalore, e2o is priced at INR 6.49 lakhs (ex-showroom) and Mahindra offers attractive finance/installment schemes with a tie up with SBI. Moreover, cost savings through use of electricity and low maintenance cost etc, means the owner would end up saving slightly more than INR 3 lakhs every 5 years. But remember that every five years you also require to replace the lithium ion battery, which itself could cost about INR 2 lakhs.
In the best possible scenario you would end up saving a few thousand rupees, if you buy a vehicle that costs as much or more than e2o, but it would be more profitable to own a vehicle that cost considerably less than e2o. Now, the question arises. Would a person in the capacity to spend in the range of INR 7 lakhs prefer a small city car like the e2o or a premium hatchback, compact SUV? In most cases the choice would be the latter.
That said, those who are specifically looking for an ultra compact city only car and wants to do their bit for Mother Earth, the e2o is certainly a good choice.
