Land Rover To Merge Freelander With Discover Range

The Land Rover Freelander brand will be discarded for good and new ‘Freelander' models integrated into the Discover family, Autocar has learnt from company sources. The Freelander brand has already been discontinued in the US, where the Freelander is referred to as LR2 and the Defender as LR4.

The decision to do away with the Freelander brand has to do with streamlining Land Rover's present lineup, which consists of the Range Rover, Discovery, Defender and Freelander brands. With each family again subdivided into several models it creates confusion among buyers.

In fact, during Land Rover's recent 65th anniversary event company global brand director John Edwards stated Land Rover was made up of "three iconic brands: Range Rover, Discovery and Defender", making clear the the company's intentions.

The new Freelander models will be built on an extended Evoque platform and are expected to hit the market during the later half of next year. Two new models, now sporting the Discovery nameplate, will join the new Discovery lineup. The new models will likely be seven and five seaters, built on the all aluminium PLA architecture.

The new Discovery family will supply Land Rover with tough, off-road models. Other than the new ‘Freelanders' joining the Discovery range, it will also consist of three other models, one of them will be a sub 4 meter compact urban commuter.
