Lamborghini Egoista Revealed At 50th Anniversary

By Ganesh

Truly, 2013 has been a supercar bonanza. We are only five months into the year and already we have been treated with three exotics from the big three of the supercar league, Lamborghini, McLaren and Ferrari. And now comes another and the fact that it was unexpected makes it all the more sweeter.

Lamborghini Veneno was a monster. No one doubts that. While many loved the extreme angular design, an equal number did not take to it. Perhaps to make up for it the Santa Bolognese automaker revealed the Egoista. A supercar like nothing we ever expected.

Lamborghini Egoista is a single seater, inspired by aircrafts, but also takes design cues from the Apache attack helicopter and is perhaps the first Lamborghini that is not named after a Bull. More interesting details and images in the gallery below.

The name

The name

Egoista means selfish in Italian. So, why is it named ‘selfish'? It's because it is meant to be driven and enjoyed by a single person.

Design

Design

Lamborghini is designed by Walter De Silva, head of VW Group Design. Alessandro Dambrosio is responsible for the exterior and Stefan Sielaff for the interior. With the Egoista, Lamborghini has taken its aviation inspired design ever closer to an actual aircraft. It not just the typical Lamborghini resembling an aircraft, but in fact, it even uses anti-radar material in its body. Then there is the aircraft like canopy that lifts up to let the pilot into the cockpit and out. There are no doors here. Lamborghini Egoista does not have traditional headlights, but different coloured LED lights on the front, rear and even the top.

Interior

Interior

The interior is minimalist. A single racing seat with four point racing harness keeps the pilot in place. The steering is detachable and the a heads up display like in a fighter aircraft displays vital information.

Engine

Engine

Lamborghini Egoista is powered by a 5.2 liter V10 engine taken from the Gallardo, which delivers 600 HP. Details are limited to that for now.

Aerodynamics

Aerodynamics

The Egoista features the typical Lamborghini design philosophy that we are used to, but takes it to a new extreme, which is no less than crazy. Also, for the first time, the Egoista features active rear flaps, like some other supercars. The two air flaps are automatically deployed to increase stability when ever required.

"I am very attached to this Italian brand, being an Italian myself. I wanted to pay homage to and think up a vehicle to underline the fact that Lamborghinis have always been made with passion, and with the heart more than the head," said an emotional Walter De Silva.

"This is a car made for one person only, to allow them to have fun and express their personality to the maximum. It is designed purely for hyper-sophisticated people who want only the most extreme and special things in the world. It represents hedonism taken to the extreme, it is a car without compromises, in a word: egoista (selfish)," De Silva further explained.

"The cockpit, made completely of carbon fiber and aluminum, represents a sort of survival cell, allowing the driver to isolate and protect themselves from external elements," De Silva explained."We kept an eye on the future when designing the Egoista, with the idea that its cockpit could have been taken from a jet aircraft and integrated into a road vehicle, to provide a different travel option."

Lamborghini Egoista

The Egoista contains, in Walter De Silva's opinion, all the product criteria which are part of Lamborghini's make-up. "It's as if Ferruccio Lamborghini were saying: I'm going to put the engine in the back, I don't want a passenger. I want it for myself, and I want it as I imagine it to be. It is a fanatical vehicle, Egoista fits it well."

Lamborghini Egoista

"If Lamborghinis are cars for the few, this one goes further. It is a car for itself, a gift from Lamborghini to Lamborghini, resplendent in its solitude. The Egoista is pure emotion, Never Never Land, which no one can ever possess, and which will always remain a dream, for everyone", says Lamborghini.
