Jaguar Land Rover To Begin Production In India?
Jaguar Land Rover maybe owned by the Indian manufacturer Tata Motors, but this has not resulted in JLA starting full fledged local production on Indian soil. Yet. ET has now learned from its sources that this might soon change.
According to these sources Jaguar Land Rover is analysing the possibility of starting production of JLA automobiles in India from scratch. If the plan does take shape it will not just bring sales price of JLA vehicles in India, but also help with exporting vehicles to China, which has emerged one of the automakers largest market.
At present JLR assembles two models in India, the recently announced Jaguar XF saloon, which is put together in Tata's plant in Pune and Range Rover Freelander 2, which is also assembled in Pune. Besides these two, JLR is also set to begin assembly of Range Rover Evoque in the country soon.
While both models have been extremely popular in India, the company's flagship models haven't picked up pace in the country. This is mainly due to the high tax imposed on imported luxury vehicles. With the import duties further increased this budget session sales of imported models are sure to fall down further.
The present automobile environment in India is such that it only benefits manufacturers that build their vehicles locally and hence this news, at this point of time, makes perfect sense. Naturally, if and when production does begin locally it will be the Jaguar XF and Freelander 2 that will start rolling out first.
"Jaguar Land Rover has ambitious plans to expand its manufacturing footprint and increase production in markets outside Britain," Del Sehmar, a Mumbai-based spokesman for the company, told Reuters. Sehmar said, "We continue to examine options to expand our range of locally assembled products."
