Hyundai i10 Diesel Engine Out Of The Picture

By Ganesh

The recently launched Hyundai Grand i10 is offered in a new diesel engine variant. The unit is a 1.1 liter 3 cylinder, U2 CDRI turbo diesel, the smallest diesel engine on offer by Hyundai anywhere. The same engine is also part of the Euro spec 2014 i10 hatch lineup, scheduled to be unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show.

"There are no plans to share the 1.1 litre diesel engine with the i10", BS quotes Nalin Kapoor, senior general manager and group head marketing, Hyundai Motor India as saying.

The reason behind Hyundai's decision is the uncertainty surrounding diesel pricing in India. Currently a subsidised fuel, diesel is prefered over petrol for the same reason. However, the government could totally stop providing subsidy for diesel in the near future at which point the demand for diesel cars will drastically come down.

In fact, Hyundai believes demand for high maintenance diesel cars is not as high for small city cars such as the i10 itself. "Six months back we saw the recovery of petrol variants and this should be sustained", Kapoor said.

For Hyundai, i10 is already an extremely high selling model that does not require a sales boost with a diesel unit. Hence, the trouble of introducing one is not justified. Hyundai i10 in India is comes with 1.2 liter and 1.1 liter petrol engines and LPG variants.
