Hybrid Public Transport Vehicles To Debut In Delhi

As per the ambitious National Electric Mobility Mission Plan (NEMMP) set up by the government of India trial runs of electric and hybrid three wheelers, mini buses and busses will begin in New Delhi as soon as August. Under the plan the government wants to try and convert at least 17 percent of all Indian vehicles plying on Indian roads to hybrid/electrics by the year 2020.

The trial run of hybrid public transport vehicles in the capital city is the first step towards exploration of widespread use of alternate fuel. Going forward the government is also likely to extend subsidies to manufacturers of hybrid and electric vehicles.

At present only a few players have an active presence in the alternate fuel vehicles space in India, namely, Mahindra and Toyota. Mahindra, which earlier this year launched the new Reva electric is expected to further expand its portfolio with electric version of Verito. At the same time Toyota, a world leading hybrid vehicle manufacturer, will introduce hybrid Camry sedans. Hybrid and electric vehicle manufacturers have for long sought government subsidy and the NEMMP is the answer to their requests.

"India has the potential to emerge as a global manufacturing hub for electric and hybrid vehicles," read a PMO press release, which sheds light on the scope of the ambitious programme planned.

Furthermore, India will also begin work on a 70-100 seater commercial aircraft, with a time frame of 5 to 7 years. The driving force behind this is the fact that China has already began developing a similar aircraft and India cannot be left behind it's rival.
