Honda's Luxury Brand Acura For India Is Possible
Honda is not averse to the idea of introducing cars belonging to its halo brand, Acura in India. Cars from this luxury division of Honda are sold in a few countries across the world, which includes North America and China. The division is also involved in motorsports in America.
The notion that Honda is open to the idea of introducing the Acura brand in India has arrived from a recent comment given by Honda Cars India president, Hironori Kanayama, to Autocar. In his statement Kanayama stated that the company will consider bringing Acura here once the market matures, but until that point their priority is not towards luxury cars.
It can be said with certainty that an Acura branded car will not be seen in India for sometime to come. One may argue that luxury brands such as Mercedes, Audi and BMW are doing fairly good business here. However, these are brands that solely concentrate on luxury vehicles.
On the other hand, for automakers such as Honda, Toyota and Nissan to get into the luxury car market would mean launching whole new brands, namely Acura, Lexus and Infiniti respectively.
The only feasible way to do so would be assemble them locally (CKD) since the CBU route would too expensive. But the CKD route would only make financial sense if there is enough demand to sustain it. And the Indian market is not mature enough to sustain same amount sales as the German luxury brands receive.
