Honda To Return To F1 As Mclaren Engine Supplier
The reason that has prompted Honda to announce its return to Formula 1 as an engine supplier is the regulation changes that will take effect from 2014. FIA has mandated use of 1.6 liter turbocharged engines, which are more fuel efficient and produce lower emissions.
Honda boss, Takanobu stated, "Honda has a long history of advancing our technologies and nurturing our people by participating in the world's most prestigious automobile racing series." He added, "The new F1 regulations with their significant environmental focus will inspire even greater development of our own advanced technologies."
The announcement means the two players, Honda and Mclaren are rekindling a partnership, which was one of the greatest the sport has witnessed. The Mclaren and Honda team won consecutive world drivers' titles from 1988-91, with Ayrton Senna winning the three of the four races and Alain Prost the last one. In 1988, the team emerged victorious in 15 of 16 races.
Mclaren currently sources its engines from Mercedes and will continue to use them for the 2014 season.
McLaren team principal Martin Whitmarsh called the partnership "a new and exciting chapter" He added: "The names of McLaren and Honda are synonymous with success in Formula 1, and, for everyone who works for both companies, the weight of our past achievements together lies heavily on our shoulders. But it's a mark of the ambition and resolve we both share that we want once again to take McLaren-Honda to the very pinnacle of Formula 1 success. Together we have a great legacy - and we're utterly committed to maintaining it."
