Gumpert The German Supercar Maker May Well Be Dead
The German supercar maker Gumpert may finally cease to exist. Gumpert, known mostly for its brutish looking supercar Apollo, had filed for insolvency in 2012. The company was founded in 2004 by Roland Gumpert who was previously Sport Director at Audi.
Earlier this year it was announced that the company had gained financial support from an investor, who was not named. Reports have now emerged that the investor has backed out, which would essentially mean the end of Gumpert.
The company was most well known for its supercar, Apollo. An extremely powerful car, it came in three flavours, a 650 HP base model and a massive 800 HP hypercar. The car came to limelight when it set the lap record at Nurburgring in 2009 and later appeared in BBC UK's Top Gear.

The car was developed keeping only one thing in mind. A purpose built vehicle that delivered raw power and performance, which it did, definitively. Apollo gained much praise by everyone who drove it, however, more than its performance its poor looks (though functional) took precedence.
Richard Hammond, during its Top Gear appearance, said the Apollo had a face only a mother could love. While the Apollo delivered Ferrari and Lamborghini rivalling performance it was the exact opposite in the looks department.
Gumpert will now join the list of other German origin supercar companies that have gone under. The remnants of Gumpert is likely to be picked up by Audi.
