Team Galag Tumbler Heads To Gumball 3000
Gumball 3000 is an annual road rally. But technically, it is more of an auto tour, with a 3000 mile course (4828 km). Also, unlike a real rally Gumball 3000 is not a competitive race, with the focus being more on the cars that take part. Traditionally, Gumball 3000 has been all about wacky vehicles and their wacky owners. One could see anything from a custom built Death Racer style Mustang to a souped up ice cream van doing the 3000 miles of the rally. In recent years, however, the majority of the racers come with customised supercars and exotics such as Veyrons or Zondas.
Bringing back the craziness for the 2013 edition of Gumball 3000 (which also happens to be the 15th anniversary of the rally) is Team Galag, who will enter the rally with a street legal Tumbler, an exact replica of the Batmobile from the Batman movies. Team Galag from Saudi Arabia, teamed up with Parker Brothers Concepts to bring the Tumbler to life at an estimated cost of $1.55 million (~ INR 10 crores).
The real life Tumbler aka Batmobile is powered by a 6.2 liter V8 engine that produces 450 HP. Top speed is limited to 100 mph or 160 km/h since the vehicle is quite heavy at 2.5 tonnes. Remember, Team Galag will drive their Tumbler the full 3000 miles long course of the rally, which means the Batmobile has been built to last. 2013 Gumball 3000 will begin on May 18 in Copenhagen, Denmark. Participants will then drive to Stockholm, Helsinki, St Petersburg, Tallinn, Riga, Warsaw, Krakow, Vienna and finally conclude the rally at the Monaco Grand Prix on May 26th.
And did we mention there is no prize for ‘winning'. There is a 'Spirit of the Gumball' Trophy that is awarded, but to a team which has shown true sportsmanship or has survived against all odds.
