GM Ordered To Replace Opel Astra By Consumer Forum

Opel Astra GM
Lalit Bhasin, an advocate from Delhi purchased an Opel Astra Club sedan 13 years back, in 2000, from an authorized General Motors India dealership. Unfortunately for Bhasin, the car started giving problems from the very first month of buying it. The problems with the vehicle were severe and consistent, and existed till the car finally broke down for the last time in 2008-09.

Over the years Bhasin has had to take his Opel Astra to the workshop more than 20 times for repair work, but the problems were never rectified. After years of struggling with his car Bhasin can now finally breath a sigh of relief as the South West District Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has released a judgment in favour of him.

"From the record, it is observed the vehicle in question was repaired by the opposite party 2 (dealer) on more than 20 occasions...According to us, the continuous recurrence of the problems in the vehicle was very serious matter and should not have been taken casually.
"We come to the conclusion that the vehicle in question is having some manufacturing defects due to which it continuously gave problems and lastly stopped working," the consumer forum stated, as quoted by ET.

General Motors India has been ordered to either replace the car with a new one or pay a compensation of INR 8 lakhs. In addition, GM India and the dealer which sold the defective car have been ordered to pay INR 3.67lakhs as a compensation for the all those times Bhasin was forced to take the car for repairs.
