GM Planning New Entry Level Chevrolet Corvette
The Chevy Corvette, General Motors answer to European performance cars, could have a new entry level cousin that will cost significantly less than the current generation Stingray, says Reuters, who has learned the matter from sources privy to the matter.
The 2014 Corvette Stingray unveiled earlier this year by General Motors ahead of the Detroit Motor Show is a brand new Corvette, which comes with extensive upgrades, new features and a leaner and sharper design, which makes the car look fast even when standing still.

While the Stingray is powered by a new 450 HP, 610 Nm, 6.2-liter LT1 V8 mid-mounted engine, with a starting price tag of $50,000, which goes up to $112,600, a new entry level Corvette model will have a less powerful 5.3 liter V8 unit, say these sources, with a lower price tag. They also say the new entry level Corvette will only be offered in coupe format. Naturally, several ‘luxury' features, including automatic climate control will also be missing.
Understandable, when asked by Reuters about the report GM spokesman Monte Doran said: "We haven't even announced pricing for the Stingray yet, so it's a little premature to talk about what's coming next." He added, "At this moment, we don't have any plans to offer something below where the Stingray is."
The Corvette, which has now been around for 60 years, is GM's flagship sports car and is an American icon, which is also referred to as "America's sports car." Despite its iconic stature sales have dropped over the years, which has mostly to do with the economic situation. This makes the idea of an entry level Corvette all the more alluring.
"Clearly, there's a lot of opportunity with Corvette," said one of the sources. "It's good for General Motors to be thinking out of the box a little bit."
