Garmin Announces Portable Head-Up Display For Cars
Garmin, a world leader in satellite navigation display devices, has announced its first ever portable Head-Up Display device, HUD. This new portable device lets Garmin be in race, without losing to smartphone based navigation systems that are gradually eating into Garmin's traditional business.
The new Garmin HUD system is a portable device that can project basic navigation information onto a transparent film, which itself can be attached to a car's windshield, directly in the line of sight of the driver. Alternately, the display can also be projected onto a provided reflector lens that attaches directly to the HUD device. The device itself is placed on the dashboard.

The HUD device receives information from a smartphone running Garmin StreetPilot1 or NAVIGON app, via Bluetooth. The device is compatible with most smartphones available in the market. Following are the features offered by Garmin HUD.
The HUD displays current speed, speed limit, indicator to show the when you need to turn, distance to the next turn and destination arrival time. In addition, the display also informs what lane to be in for the next turn, alerts when you exceed the speed limit, warns you about upcoming camera traps and traffic status. The car's stereo system can also be connected to the app to receive turn by turn voice navigation.
Garmin HUD is priced at $129.99 in the U.S, which is relatively inexpensive and can let you equip your budget car with a high-tech feature sometimes found in high-end luxury cars. No word on availability in India yet.
