Ford Formula EcoBoost Takes On Audi R8, BMW M6 & Mercedes A45 AMG

Ford Formula EcoBoost is a lightweight open wheeled single seater which the automaker showed off to the world about an year back. Powered by Ford's International Engine of the Year award winning 1.0 liter EcoBoost engine, the primary purpose of this Ford Formula was to show to the world the capabilities of the engine that powers Ford cars around the world, including the EcoSport.

Though a marketing stunt, the Ford Formula EcoBoost left everyone open mouthed when it managed to lap Nurburgring in 7 min 22 seconds. Faster than a Lamborghini Aventador and even the legendary Ferrari Enzo.

So how does a tiny 1.0 liter engine outperform supercars? It all has to do with turbocharging and achieving a good power to weight ratio.

The turbocharged 3 cylinder EcoBoost engine produces 202 HP in the Ford Formula EcoBoost and it only has to power 498 kg of car (plus the driver). What's more, Ford actually made this car road legal. Finally, the most astonishing thing. Ford claims, the Formula EcoBoost can deliver a mileage of more than 43 km/l. This is a true piece of engineering marvel and every petrolhead's dream come true.

In the video below you see Autocar's Steve Sutcliffe compare the Ford Formula EcoBoost against three other cars - Audi R8, BMW M6 Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz A45 AMG. Despite the wet weather you'll be astonished by how well the small 1.0 liter engine powered road legal car performs against the larger, more powerful cars.
