Ford Plans To Export EcoSport To 50 Countries

By Ganesh

Ford had made it's plans known from the start about exporting the EcoSport compact SUV manufactured in India. This manufacturing strategy ensures that prices in India remain extremely competitive, while also increasing profit margins of exported units. The American automaker already follows this strategy with the Figo hatchback, which is exported to 38 countries from India.

Ford India President and Managing Director Joginder Singh was quoted by PTI as saying, "We have ambitious plans for exporting EcoSport in the international market. The Figo is currently exported to 38 markets from India. We hope to repeat that or even better it with the EcoSport. Our plan to make India the global export hub for Ford is on track."

Ford's initial plan is to export EcoSport models built in India to 40 countries soon after its launch in the country, which will eventually be expanded to 50 countries. The EcoSport, like the rest of Ford's Indian lineup, will be mostly manufactured in its Chennai plant. To be exact, Ford will export 25 percent of the cars built in its Chennai plant, along with 40 percent of the engines built in India.

In addition to its Chennai plant Ford also plans to invest a $1 million (~ INR 6 crores) in its Sanand plant in Gujarat. The Sanand plant has a capacity of 2.4 lakh vehicles, along with the capacity to manufacture 2.7 lakh engines annually. Combined with the Chennai plant Ford in India has a total production capacity of 4.4 lakh vehicles and 6.1 lakh engines per year.
