VW Golf Named European Car Of The Year 2013
A humble hatchback, the seventh generation Volkswagen Golf has won the coveted European Car of the Year 2013 award, beating seven other capable cars. The award was received by Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg, Volkswagen AG Head of Development, and Walter de Silva, head of Design jointly at a special press conference held on the eve of Geneva Motor Show.
The jury consisting of auto journalists from across europe had previously nominated eight cars for the title. These cars were Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ, Volvo V40, Ford B-Max, Mercedes A-class, Renault Clio, Peugeot 208 and Hyundai i30.

While the competition was tough between the other cars, the VW Golf won by a significant margin, leading the Toyota GT86/Subaru BRZ in second position by 212 points.

In the 38 year long history of Car of the Year awards VW Golf has won it once before in 1992, but significantly, every generation of Golf has finished in the top three position.

The jury selected the Golf for its "overall balance and the outstanding achievements in safety, fuel efficiency, dynamics and comfort"

The seventh generation VW Golf is powered by a 1.2TSI (85&105 hp), 1.4TSI (122 & 140 hp) petrol engine and a 1.6TDi (105 hp), 2.0TDi (150 hp) diesel unit.

Fuel economy and emission figures are as follows:
Petrol engines: 4.8 to 5.2 l/100 km - 112 to 116 g/km
Diesel engines: 3.8 to 4.4 l/100 km - 99 to 117 g/km

Dr. Martin Winterkorn, Chairman of the Board of Volkswagen, would say: "That's a superb result, and we are very proud of it.
