Electric Vehicles To Be Cheaper After Budget
This key policy on electric vehicles will be introduced in the upcoming budget for 2013-14. According to the reports, the Indian government will be allocating INR 350 crores to 500 crores to be used to provide subsidy to the buyers of electric vehicles.
The subsidy for electric vehicles is not new in India. Several state governments had offered subsidies that made electric cars such as the Revai and electric scooter attractive to buyers. However the subsidy is no longer available which has drastically reduced sales of electric scooters.
In fact some electric scooter manufacturers have completely closed down. The electric vehicle industry has been lobbying hard for the revival of the subsidy and it appears to have succeeded. Another name that we should take on this topic is that of the Mahindra Reva electric car company.
Mahindra Reva had opened a brand new plant to manufacture its upcoming Reva NXR electric car on 22nd August. Mahindra group chairman Mr Anand Mahindra had then stated that electric vehicles needed government support and his company was working with the government in this regard.
The news of the subsidy to electric vehicles will definitely bring cheer to Mahindra Reva as well as eco-friendly vehicle users. The subsidy will make electric vehicles more affordable and will also encourage research and development in the segment.
The subsidy could also be the reason behind the delayed launch of the Reva NXR. The two door four seater's price was not revealed by Mahindra Reva when it was unveiled in January 2012. The company has never confirmed a launch date despite the car being ready to hit the road. We can now expect the Reva NXR's launch at least after the budget for sure.
