Drayson Racing: World Electric Land Speed Record
Lord Drayson, an ex-UK politico, businessman, amature racing driver and owner of Drayson Racing Technologies, has set a new landspeed world record for a lightweight electric car. He drove his company's Lola B12 69/EV Le Mans prototype on June 25 at the RAF Elvington Airfield in Yorkshire. The electric car reached a record top speed of 328.6 km/h.
The previous record stood at 281.6 km/h, having been set by Battery Box General Electric way back in in 1974. Hold on! Wasn't the world electric car land speed record set in 2010 by a French company that had managed a top speed of 495 km/h? That is correct. However, Drayson's speed record is for a lightweight electric car, recognized by FIA. For this, the team had to maintain a weight of under 1000 kg for the Lola B12.
Drayson Racing managed to do this by transforming one of their earlier Le Mans Series bio-fuel powered car into an electric car by fitting it with 20 kWh battery that produced 850 HP.
"I'm delighted we've beaten the record tonight and can show the world EVs can be fast and reliable. Drayson Racing is a laboratory for EV technology, testing it to the most extreme level, as we've seen today. This is a true celebration of Britain's leading position within the burgeoning electric vehicle industry and I'm delighted to be at the forefront of this electric revolution. We hope to set more records tomorrow." Lord Drayson stated.
