Diesel Price Hike Will Not Affect Us - Maruti

Maruti Suzuki
The Indian government has allowed oil companies to increase diesel prices in small quantities in the coming months. While many are expecting the diesel price hike would act as a speed bump to the already slowing car industry, Maruti Suzuki chairman RC Bhargava has stated that there will be a minimal impact on diesel car sales.

Mr RC Bhargava has stated that Maruti Suzuki, in particular will not face any sales issues due to the diesel price hike. He added that Maruti Suzuki had a waiting list for its diesel cars and it was unlikely that it would come down with a marginal increase in diesel prices.

Demand for diesel cars has increased exponentially in the past couple of years owing the the price difference between petrol and diesel. With regular increase in petrol prices, customers preferred to buy diesel cars which offer a better mileage and the fuel is cheaper too. With the government decision allowing diesel price hike there can be a shift in customer preference.

Mr RC Bhargava has conceded that regular increase in diesel prices would have an impact on diesel car sales. Diesel car owners will see an increase in ownership costs. When asked if the diesel price hike will lead to Maruti Suzuki deferring or reducing its expansion plans, Mr. RC Bhargava stated that the company was expanding diesel engine production at its Gurgaon plant by 150,000 units this year and an additional 150,000 will be added later next year.

Maruti Suzuki sells the Swift, Swift DZire, SX4, Ritz and Ertiga in diesel. Sales of all the mentioned cars except the SX4 have been growing in the past few months.
