Detroit Electric Unveils SP:01 Electric Sports Car
Detroit Electric, an automobile company that has not built a car for quite some time, is back with a bang, with an electric production car, which it claims is the fastest on the planet. It is the SP:01.
The SP:01, like the Tesla Roadster, is based on a Lotus. Lotus Exige to be precise. Before we learn more about the SP:01, an introduction to the vehicle in Chairman and CEO, Detroit Electric Albert Lam's own words. "The SP:01 will be exclusive, luxurious and technologically advanced." He adds, "It is a milestone in the history of the Detroit Electric brand, but also a significant development for the international EV sector. The car will allow us to demonstrate to the world our ability to build an exciting and innovative product, one that displays outstanding performance coupled with strong green credentials, and which delivers an exhilarating driving experience." The company starts with their SP:01 by first getting the rolling chassis of the Exige from Lotus in the U.K, after which they build their own body from carbon fiber. While the design is still clearly the same as Exige, Detroit Electric has incorporated a few bespoke design elements of its own.
The use of carbon and the aluminium chassis means the completed car weighs just 1,070 kg (2358 lbs). This gives the SP:01's electric motors relatively less to pull so that its performance is that of a supercar. The 37 kWh battery powers a motor that generates 150 kW (200 HP) and 225 Nm (166 lb-ft) of torque. This is enough power to propel the SP:01 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.7 seconds (The same as the Tesla Roadster) and give it a top speed of 248 km/h (155 mph).
While a four speed manual gearbox is provided as standard, a fifth is available as an option, along with a two speed automatic option. Another feature of SP:01 is the Smartphone Application Managed Infotainment system or "SAMI" , which is basically a built-in smartphone based control system for the car's functions.
Detroit Electric claims, when tested according to New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) the SP:01 delivers a range of 190 miles or about 307 km. The battery can be fully charged in 4.3 hours and then there is regenerative braking of course.
Detroit Electric provides a three-year 30,000-mile warranty for the SP:01 and production is scheduled to begin from August 2013, with a price tag of $135,000 (€105,000 or INR 7,408,800).
