DC Design Avanti:India's First Sports Car
DC Design announced recently about its plan to turn from a car designer and customization firm to a manufacturer. The company plans to open a production plant in Sanand, Gujarat, with an investment of INR 60 crores towards this end.
Production of the Avanti is expected to begin by the end of 2013, which will be followed by a sports SUV in 2014. Here is a refresher of what India's first sports car is all about.
Designed and developed by Dilip Chhabria led DC Design, the Avanti was unveiled as a concept at the 2012 Delhi Auto Expo.
The Avanti sports a mid-mounted engine, in the style of a supercar, which restricts it to a two seater coupe configuration.
The initial engine provided, will reportedly be a Ford sourced 4 cylinder, turbocharged unit, presumably a Ford EcoBoost engine, that will deliver 265 HP.
The plan is to replace it with a more powerful V6 unit from Honda in the future that will be capable of producing power in the region of 400-500 HP.
The Avanti will feature a sporty 6 speed dual clutch transmission, which is the norm with high performance cars these days.
The Avanti's frame is built from aluminium, while the body panels are made from fiberglass. It remains to be seen if the production version will feature the same body panels.
The Avanti's Achilles heel is its weight, which at 1562 kg, is relatively heavy for a car in this segment. This, despite the fact that aluminium is the primary material used in its construction.
DC Design claims the Avanti can do a 0 - 100 km/h in less than 7 seconds.
DC Design is expected to price the Avanti sports car in the price range of INR 25 - 30 lakhs.
