India Bound Chrysler Jeeps To Be Built In China

This is the first time Jeep brands will be built outside the United States after Fiat took over the troubled American car group. Chrysler has stated that the new agreement is a big step for the company in its efforts to make Jeep a global brand.
Speaking to the media at the on going North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Guangzhou's vice chairman Zeng Qinghong also revealed information about the the deal it signed with Chrysler. The Chinese carmaker will soon increase its production capacities to accommodate Jeep's production in China.
These made in China Jeeps will be primarily built to be sold in China. Jeeps sales in 2012 has increased by 19% to more than 700,000 units which is also the highest ever in the brand's history. Jeep's entry in to China will help Jeep keep the sales momentum high.
Although Guangzhou has stated that the Jeeps it will build in China will be sold in China, it is yet unclear if Jeep will use China as an export hub too. Fiat is set to launch the Jeep brand in India in 2013. It is easier to bring in Jeeps from China which is closer to India than China. It is possible that the made in China Jeeps could roll in to India too.
However, if Jeep is able to generate high demand in China itself, Fiat will be forced to source Jeeps from the United States. Jeep will be launching the Grand Cherokee and the Wrangler in India in the later half of this year.
