Bugatti Galibier Sedan Project Is All But Dead

By Ganesh

Bugatti, the French car brand with a rich history and the makers of an insanely powerful car, is not likely to retrace its historical path by making a high-end luxury sedan. We are talking about the Bugatti Galibier super sedan.

The Galibier was introduced as a concept for the first time in 2009, when Bugatti was under the leadership of Franz-Josef Paefgen. The plan was to make a very powerful (800 HP) and outrageously luxurious sedan. So opulent that it would give a Rolls Royce inferiority complex. Coming from an automaker like Bugatti that did not sound crazy.

After a few years of silence the Galibier project came to light once again, this time Bugatti being under the leadership of Wolfgang Durheimer. What Durheimer felt was 800HP did not sit well alongside the monstrous 1,200 Veyron. Hence, it was decided to bump the Galibier performance to match the Veyron's.

The leadership at Bugatti changed once more, not too long back, with Wolfgang Schreiber (one of the main names behind the Veyron) at the helm. During a recent talk Schreiber had with Motor Trend, it came to light that no one at Bugatti was spending too much time or resource on the Galibier project at all.

The focus instead is on developing the successor to the Veyron. Schreiber believes, with a high performance car there is not room for a luxury vehicle. Hence, Galibier will not be the Royale of the 21st century. The last of the Veyrons will leave the manufacturring line in littel over a year, post which its successor will take its place. The Galibier super sedan project, meanwhile, is as good as dead.
