BMW X4 Concept 'Sports Activity Coupe' Revealed

By Ganesh

The ‘Sports Activity Vehicle' (SAV) segment was created by BMW in 1999 and is more or less the only automaker that uses the term. Another related BMW developed segment, which is relatively new, is the ‘Sports Activity Coupe' (SAC) segment, which came about much later in 2008.

The SAV segment currently consists of BMW X1, X3 and X5, while the SAC segment only has the X6. The model that will now expand the SAC segment is the new X4 Concept, which is set to be unveiled at the Shanghai Auto Show on April 21. Leaked images of the BMW X4 Concept SAC appeared on the internet, which has now prompted the Bavarian automaker to release official images ahead of its world premiere. More details post the image gallery.

Globally, the crossover segment is one of the fastest growing, indicating its popularity. With 1 in every 4 BMW models sold worldwide belonging to the X Series, it is already among its highest selling model lineup. The automaker wishes to tap into this profitable market further with the introduction of new models to the X Series. The X4 is the first of the new models, which will go into production early next year, with only a few modifications to the concept.

BMW X4 design team is headed by lead designer, Karim Habib. The unique thing about the X4's design is that its basic design is based on the X6, but it has been built on the smaller X3 platform. Also, the X4 takes some of its design cues from the new 3-Series F30 and the upcoming 4-Series Coupe. These design features are evident when you see the front and rear end of the car, such as the grille, front fender, air intake etc,. The X4 currently sports 21 inch wheels, but the production version will get slightly smaller ones.

BMW X4 measures 183 inches (4,648 mm) long, 75.4 inches (1,915 mm) wide and 63.9 inches (1,622 mm) high. The standard BMW wheelbase length of 110.6 inches (2,810 mm) is retained, due to the use of the X3 platform.

Details about the X4 are currently limited to this. Further details will only emerge closer to actually launch date.
