BMW ConnectDrive To Go Online Via SIM

The Bavarian automaker is focused on expanding its ConnectDrive sat nav and infotainment system to all its models by the year 2015. BMW has also made several enhancements and added new features to its ConnectDrive system. This means, all BMW models in the near future will get their own SIM cards for all ConnectDrive system features to work.

By equipping cars with SIM cards BMW's ConnectDrive system would become independent of smartphones. This will also allow ConnectDrive to be a lot more flexible and will let users create profiles, each with its own set of functions enabled as per the user's choice.

Another advantage of running ConnectDrive with the car's own SIM card would be that updates to the software and services will come over-the-air automatically.

BMW aims to expand ConnectDrive system to its cars in 14 more countries this year. Combined with the existing regions the automaker aims to connect 25 million BMW's worldwide to the ConnectDrive system by the year 2017.

BMW's ConenctDrive will eventually turn into an OS much like a mobile OS such as iOS or Android, complete with a dedicated App Store. BMW owners will be able to download and install services from the app store and even third party apps will become available for download.
