BMTC To Hold K9 Electric Bus Trial Runs In Bangalore

In the coming weeks Bangalore city will witness electric buses plying on its roads. However, these will only be trial runs that will be held by the city's transport department, Bangalore Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC).

The electric buses, K9 D, built by a Chinese company, is currently parked in the city's Shantinagar bus depot. The bus is awaiting permission from the transport authority before trial runs are started.

BMTC will run the electric bus for a period of 3 months ascertain its capabilities. While a route has not been determined yet, it is likely to be taken on a long and traffic infested route. This will prove whether or not the bus is suitable to be operated in the city.

The K9 D electric bus, also called eBus, runs on four ferrous batteries, with a claimed range of 250 km in urban road conditions. The bus weights over 14 tons, is over 12 meters long, 2.5 meter wide and 3.4 meters heigh. According to the manufacturers, the bus can seat 40 passengers, but this can vary depending on seating configuration.

It takes 6 hours to charge the batteries to full capacity. However, fast charging cuts that time to less than half that time. The manufacturer claims the K9 electric bus consumes 100 kWh/60 min, which works out to about Rs 4 per km. For the purpose of trial runs BMTC has been allocated an additional 90,000 volts of power by BESCOM. Charging facilities will be set up at city's central bus station, Kempegowda bus station.

K9 electric buses are already operated in several cities across the the world including in the U.S, Hong Kong, Columbia, Chile, Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands.
