Maruti Dominates India's Best Selling Cars

2012 was an interesting year for those covering the automobile industry. The resurgence of Maruti Suzuki despite facing continuous strikes, the new found dominance of diesel cars, the continuous sales pressure created by increasing fuel costs and costly loans are some of the major topics. But for those of us who are only interested in cars and not the business surrounding them here is the top 10 best selling cars for 2012.

The 2012 top 10 of best selling cars in India features three new entrants to the list which includes two new cars. As expected small cars continued their dominance of the Indian car market. The top 10 is also heavily populated by cars from Maruti Suzuki. No wonder it is India's leading carmaker.

Maruti Suzuki Alto 800

Looking in to the top 10 best selling cars in India for 2012, the top spot continues to be taken by the Maruti Suzuki Alto, albeit in its new 800cc avatar. The Maruti Alto 800 was launched amidst high expectations and it ha not failed them. The sales of the Alto has declined by 9.28% due to the reduced sales of the previous version.

Maruti Suzuki Swift

The second spot is taken by yet another Maruti Suzuki, the Swift compact hatchback. The Swift has recorded an incredible 51.83% and has jumped two places from fourth in 2011.

The third best selling car in India in 2012 is again a Maruti Suzuki and it is the sedan version of the Swift. The Swift DZire also happens to be India's best selling sedan and the launch of the compact version pushed sales by an impressive 56.31%.

Maruti Suzuki WagonR

The fourth spot in the 2012 best selling car's list has been occupied by the Maruti Suzuki WagonR. The small hatchback has been pushed down two spots in 2012 but this does not mean a massive sales decline. The WagonR's sales has come down by 3.49% thanks to reduced customer interest in petrol cars.

Hyundai i10

We finally have a car that is not from Maruti in the 2012 best selling car's list. The Hyundai i10 is placed fifth, down two spots. Its sales have not impressed after a 29.85% decline.

Tata Indica

Tata Indica

The Tata Indica takes the sixth spot in the list and is one spot down from the previous year. Tata Motors' best selling car has been going strong as a fleet car for taxi operators but is yet to make a great impression to the passenger car buyer.

Hyundai Eon

Hyundai Eon

The second Hyundai in the 2012 top 10 best selling cars of India is the new Eon small car. The car the was supposed to take on Maruti Suzuki's Alto might not have had a huge impact on the best selling car yet but its popularity is slowly creeping up the charts. Its modern look along with low price will definitely lead to the Eon climb up the list in the coming years.

Hyundai i20

The Eon is followed in the top 10 by Hyundai's i20 compact hatchback. The i20 remains an impressive package despite dropping one spot in the list. Sales of the i20 have increased by a marginal 20% despite it being available with a diesel engine.

Tata Nano

Tata Nano

The Tata Nano finally makes its debut in the top 10 best selling cars of India in 2012. The cheapest car in the world might not have reached the expectations of its maker but has at least got in to the top 10 after three year of its launch. The Nano's sales has increased by 17.73% to 74,545 units in 2012. We expect the Nano to stay on the list from now considering Tata Motors plans to launch a new 800cc variant, a CNG variant as well as a much anticipated diesel variant.

Ford Figo

Ford Figo

The top 10 best selling car's list for 2012 is completed by the Ford Figo. The Figo has retained its spot from 2011 despite its sales dropping by 8.65%. Ford recently launched an updated version of the Figo and there are reports of a new entry level car being prepared to replace it in the coming years.
