Bajaj RE60 Quadricycle Production To Begin Soon

Bajaj, which first revealed the RE60 four wheeler in January 2012, with an intention to launch it later that year, was forced to slow down since the RE60 did not fall into any existing vehicle segment in India. Bajaj's hopes went up earlier this year when the government gave its initial nod for the creation of the quadricycle segment to accommodate RE60 and similar vehicles.
Interestingly, Tata Motors, the maker of Nano, the smallest road legal car in India, is opposed to the introduction of the quadricycle segment. The argument made by Tata Motors and a few others, including Maruti Suzuki, is that quadricycles such as the Bajaj RE60 are not safe for Indian roads since they will not be subjected to to same safety norms as cars.
On the contrary, Bajaj is projecting the RE60 as a replacement to existing three wheeled auto rickshaws, which have notoriously poor safety records. The RE60, owing to its closed design, will be safer than three wheelers and will also provide protection against the elements. Moreover, an emission figure of just 60 grams of CO2/km means it will be the cleanest four wheeler on Indian roads, with a fuel economy figure that is said to be twice that of existing three wheelers.
Bajaj RE60 will be powered by a DTSi 200cc, liquid cooled engine rated at 20 HP. The RE60 will be launched in 1+3 and 2+2 configurations. Eventually, commercial variants of the RE60 will also make their way out, accompanied by other quadricycles from manufacturers like Eicher.
