Bajaj Auto Plans To Launch RE60 Four Wheeler Soon
Tata Nano might soon stall to be India's only mini car. Bajaj Auto, India's second largest motorcycle manufacturer, has revealed its plan to soon launch the ultra compact RE60 four wheeler. The RE60 was first revealed in January 2012 at the Delhi Auto Expo.
Bajaj Auto's Managing Director Rajiv Bajaj told during the unveiling that the company plans to launch 5000 RE60 four wheelers initially. Production will continue at the same rate per month at its Aurangabad plant, the same plant which once used to roll out Bajaj's iconic scooters.

While the RE60 is a four wheeler, it will not be included in the same category as cars. Bajaj Auto is awaiting a government decision to create a separate segment called quadricycles. Bajaj Auto's President, Commercial Vehicles, R C Maheshwari, was quoted by Financial Express as saying, "The government has given us an in-principle approval to create this new class of four-wheelers or quadricycles." Pricing of the RE60 will only be decided after the segment is made official.
"A committee is working on regulations and norms for such vehicles. We understand that the process for the final inclusion of this new class in the commercial vehicles segment will take a few months more," he added.
Bajaj Auto's RE60 is its first foray into the four wheeler category. This compact vehicle is slightly smaller than a Tata Nano and features a 2+2 or 3+1 seating configuration. Power comes from a 216 liter, water cooled, 4 valve DTS-i petrol engine rated at 20 HP. The RE60 weights just 400 kg and delivers a mileage of 35 kmpl. Top speed of RE60 is 70 km/h.
