Quadricycles Will Hit Indian Roads From October 13
Fresh update about the introduction of Quadricycle segment in India has emerged. According to a report on TOI, the government has accepted to amend the Central Motor Vehicles Regulation to allow the introduction of Quadricycles and the revised rules & regulations will come into effect by October 13. The remaining time see wrinkles being ironed out and final changes being made.
As per the norms, a quadricycle can only be used for commercial purpose, which includes use of vehicles as passenger and goods transport. Also, a quadricycle is not allowed to ply on highways. A few other rules and regulations as as follows:
- List of materials which cannot be used to construct a quadricycle include rexine, cloth, flexible plastic etc,.
- A vehicle should have a large and visible ‘Q' badge at front
- Top speed for such a vehicle is restricted to 70 kmph
- A passenger quadricycle must have seating for four, including the driver
- A goods vehicle must seat two passengers, including the driver
- A passenger vehicle's gross weight must not exceed 450 kg
- A goods quadricycle can hold a maximum of 550 kg.
Bajaj Auto, the only company with a production ready quadricycle, has come under attack from its potential future competitors such as Tata Motors, Piaggio and Mahindra. The common complaint has been that the government is fast tracking the introduction of the new segment just to accommodate the single model in the market - Bajaj RE60.
While Tata Motors initially raised concerns about the safety offered by such vehicle, Piaggio wants the government to delay the introduction until the rest are ready with their own products. Mahindra on the other hand, believes Bajaj is forcing the rule makers into drafting the guidelines to benefit the RE60 and wants the rules to be more generalized.
All the excitement surrounding the yet to be born quadricycle segment makes us wonder whether this segment is really worth all the attention. The only expectation we have from quadricycles is that they completely replace existing three wheeled auto rickshaws.
