Melbourne Motor Show Cancelled, Is Sydney Next?

melbourne auto show cancelled
The Australian International Motor Show (AIMS) Joint Venture has announced its decision to cancel the Melbourne Motor Show. Furthermore, decision on future shows will be taken after studying the matter. But it is unlikely the show will ever take place again.

"We have made the decision to not proceed with this year's Show based on a consensus view of the Automotive Industry to focus limited marketing budgets in 2013 on firm specific activities rather than an industry based Motor Show." said Russ Tyrie, Event Director, Australian International Motor Show.

According to AIMS, its decision follows a global trend where many cities, including London, Zagreb and Amsterdam are deciding against organising city specific auto shows. The removal of Melbourne Motor Show from the list leaves Sydney as the sole auto show in Australia.

The decision was taken by the organizers due to falling number of attendance as well as lackluster interest shown by many international automakers. Volkswagen Group for example, pulled out from this year's event. This also forced the organizers to halt plans of organizing a show on the lines of Goodwood Festival of Speed, which was expected to revive interest among enthusiasts.

Visitor numbers have steadily decreased in all auto shows across Australia over the past decade, which resulted in cancellation of shows one after the other, resulting in the present situation.

For example, Melbourne attendance numbers in 2004 was 257,000 against 160,000 in 2011. SImilarly, Sydney Motor Show was attended by 320,000 people in 2001, which declined to a worrying 135,050 in 2012.
