Audi India The New No.1; Mercedes & BMW Follow
The slugfest between Germany's Big Three automakers in India has a new winner. After leading the Indian luxury car market for four straight years BMW has dropped to the third position. The new leader is Audi India, followed by Mercedes, which has also moved one place up.
At the end of last year the annual sales figures stood at 9,375 units from BMW, 9003 units from Audi and 7,138 units from Mercedes Benz. The new positions are based on unit sales in the last quarter - Jan-Mar 2013. Audi sold 2616 units in India, Mercedes Benz sold 2009 units and BMW sold 1465 units, which also included 55 Minis.

Both Audi and Mercedes have been working feverishly to gain better market share in the country. To this end both Audi and Mercedes opened several new dealerships across the country. Mercedes currently has the largest reach as far as service centers and dealerships are concerned. For Audi, its SUV line up has been a strong point as well.
Things, however, could easily change in the coming months due to introduction of new vehicles. BMW recently launched the 2013 7 Series luxury sedan facelift in the country. Furthermore, it has new vehicle launches planned including the 1 Series premium hatchback, which will replace the X1 SUV as the new entry level BMW.
Meanwhile, Mercedes will continue to expand its India portfolio with the launch of the GL Class SUV in May, followed by the launch of B Class diesel variant and both diesel and petrol variants of the A Class, which will be a direct competitor to the BMW 1 Series.
