Audi To Increase Its Reliance On SUVs

In the coming years India's largest luxury car brand, Audi, will increasingly rely on its SUV models to grow. Audi recently broke ground on a new assembly plant near Mexico City that will meet global supply demand for its SUV models.

Speaking during the groundbreaking ceremony Audi CEO Rupert Stadler said, "Worldwide, every third Audi will be an SUV by 2020." He added "The new Audi plant in Mexico will make a major contribution to that," reports Autonews.

The new Audi plant is being built with an investment of $1.3 billion and will be capable of an annual output of 150,000 units. The plant will start supplying the Q5 compact SUV model initially, which will be exported to all markets except China since a Q5 assembly plant already exists in that country. In the long run Audi will expand operations and will increase unit production to 300,000 numbers. Eventually, the plant will also support assembly of Q6 SUVs.

Audi recently became India's largest luxury car brand owing to overall sales growth. It should however, be noted that even before it reached the number 1 spot it was already the largest seller of luxury SUVs in the country. Of the three Audi SUVs sold here, the Q3, the Q5 and the Q7, the Q3 has been the best selling model for obvious reasons. Not too far though is the Q5.

Further complementing Rupert Stadler's above statement is the other statement made by Audi R&D head Wolfgang Dürheimer, who stated the company would, in the near future, come out with the Audi Q8. This would be the company's largest SUV model and will be high riding version of the A8 coupe.
