Audi To Let Go R&D Head Wolfgang Durheimer

Wolfgang Durheimer fired
Audi has reportedly fired their research and development head Wolfgang Durheimer, due to unconfirmed reasons. The former Bentley and Bugatti boss was moved over to Audi last September following a reshuffle within the Volkswagen Group. Audi's R&D team will now be headed by VW Group's R&D head Ulrich Hackenberg.

Wolfgang Durheimer's association with VW began in 1999 when he joined Porsche, where, at the time of being handed over the responsibility of Bentley and Bugatti in 2011, he was the technical head. Besides playing a critical part in the development program of the 911, Durheimer is majorly credited for getting the Cayenne sportscar into production, which proved to be highly profitable for Porsche.

Differences in opinion with VW Group CEO Martin Winterkorn is one of the reasons being cited for Durheimer's ouster. Reports are also speculating that within the VW Group people were unhappy with the stance he had taken regarding pure electric cars. Audi recently dumped its plans for a production version of the Audi R8 e-Tron, a decision that was taken under Durheimer's management.

Durheimer, reportedly, had a roadmap in mind for Audi, that concentrated more on hybrid cars than all electric vehicles. Something the VW Group management did not agree on. It is not known yet whether Durheimer will be given a different role within the VW Group or not.
