Audi R8 E-Tron Electric Car Production Plan Dumped

By Ganesh

Audi has reportedly confirmed to Autocar that R8 e-tron all electric supercar will not go into production. Audi first revealed the e-tron concept car at the 2009 Frankfurt Motor Show after which the concept car took on a more conventional shape of the regular R8. Audi was never clear about whether or not the e-tron electric car would go into production, but this is the first time the company has stated it does not intend to produce it.

The reason cited by Audi officials was non-satisfaction with current battery technologies. Reportedly, Audi was not too thrilled with the existing battery technology and felt charging time was way too high and the range not sufficient enough. Having said that, the automaker has stated it has gained immense knowledge relating to production electric car technology by working on developing the R8 e-tron.

It is definitely a shame that a fine electric car such as the R8 e-tron will not go into production. Audi R8 e-tron has a 0-100 km/h time of just 4.2 sec, while top speed is limited to 200 km/h. The e-tron also holds the distinct title of being the fastest series production car electric car around Nurburgring, covering a lap in 8.09 minutes.

In total 10 Audi R8 e-tron supercars exist today and the automaker will hold on to all of them for future development and testing purposes.
